Programs

1.Workshops and Symposia

CCK-IUP sponsors small-scale workshops and symposia which are committed to long-term projects on the basis of regular meeting.  Priority is given to subjects within premodern studies.  The current projects include

The Early China Seminar

The Early China Seminar is an inter-university forum for the study of early Chinese civilization from the Neolithic period to the end of the Han Dynasty (A.D. 220). The seminar offers a multidisciplinary program, bringing together scholars from all fields related to early
China: history, archaeology, art history, literature and language, religion and philosophy. The seminar meets five times a year and each meeting futures two paper presentations.

The Chinese Medieval Studies Workshop on Medieval Chinese Culture and Literature

The Chinese Medieval Studies Workshop at Columbia University began in 2003 as a forum for the exchange of ideas on both specific scholarly questions and the general state of the medieval Chinese field, as well as to animate an underdeveloped field in American academia. For the past few years, scholars from across the United States working on medieval Chinese literature, history, and religion have gathered annually to present their current research.
The workshop has been very fruitful: it has led to interesting intellectual engagements and to the formation of a network of scholars working on the medieval period and collaborative projects among the participants.

The International Symposium on Research and Pedagogy in Classical Chinese and Chinese Language History

To promote research on Classical Chinese and Chinese language history, and apply the findings to classical Chinese teaching and learning, the International Symposium on Research and Pedagogy in Classical Chinese and Chinese Language History was inaugurated in 2003 at Columbia University. The symposium brings scholars and educators in the fields from all over the world to present their latest findings in linguistic structures of classical Chinese in particular and the evolution of Chinese language in general. The symposium emphasizes that language teaching should be based on solid linguistic research, and welcomes studies in all theoretical frameworks, formal, functional and typological. The symposium meets once in two years.
